The European bike-sharing landscape continues to evolve, with station-based systems showing remarkable growth in 2024. According to Fluctuo’s European Shared Mobility Annual Review 2024, fleet sizes have expanded by 9%, while ridership has surged by 12% compared to 2023. The total fleet size of station-based (docked) systems now stands at 254,000 bikes across Europe, highlighting the scale and impact of these systems. This positive trend underscores the increasing popularity of structured bike-sharing solutions, particularly in major urban centers.

Paris’ Vélib’ Still Leads the Way

Paris’ Vélib’ remains the undisputed leader among European bike-sharing systems, maintaining a comfortable lead over competitors. With nearly 50 million trips recorded in 2024, it continues to set the benchmark for large-scale, station-based bike-sharing operations.

Spain: A Hotspot for Growth

Spain saw some of the most significant developments in the sector, driven by a €20 million investment announced in September 2024 to enhance public bike-sharing infrastructure. Madrid’s BiciMAD expanded to 7,500 electric bikes, witnessing a 30% rise in ridership, with over 9.9 million trips made in 2024. The impact of Madrid’s decision to cancel private scooter and dockless bike contracts will be more evident in 2025, potentially further benefiting the station-based model.

Barcelona also made strides with its regional system, AMBici, which is now fully operational across 15 municipalities. Launched in 2023, AMBici offers 2,600 electric bikes and complements the well-established Bicing network, which itself announced plans to expand its fleet with 1,000 additional electric bikes, bringing its total to 8,000.

Mevo 2.0: A Success Story in Poland

Poland’s Mevo 2.0 system, operating in the Tri-City area, has quickly risen to prominence. It is now one of the most widely used bike-sharing schemes in Europe, reinforcing the growing demand for well-integrated, station-based networks in cities beyond Western Europe.

In this growing market Connected Cycle continues to develop its business. Most lately Fredo selected Connected Cycle to geolocate a bike sharing fleet in Annemasse, France (read more here). Other ongoing projects will be announced later this year.
