The results of the Annual “Victimization” Survey by the Statistics Department of the French Ministry of the Interior (figures published in November 2024) reveal 815,000 bicycle thefts and attempts in 2022, compared to 765,000 in 2021.
In 2022, 1.66% of people aged 18 and over report that their household has been the victim of a bicycle theft or attempted theft. Among these victims, 16% say they filed a complaint with the police or gendarmerie: 18% if it was a theft, and 6% in the case of an attempt.
While the national average is 1.66% of households affected by theft, it rises to 3% in the Paris urban area. Conversely, it is only 0.4% outside cities, i.e., in rural areas (municipalities with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants).
It is interesting to note that these figures are very accurate as they are based on an exhaustive panel of 109,334 people surveyed.
